Society notes from Prince William County during the
Revolutionary era...
Fanny Mercer daughter of Dr. Jack Macrae of Prince
William County her husband lost at sea.
1782 Virginia's 100 wealthiest Planters included Cuthbert
Bullitt of Dumfries.
Abraham Farrow and Joseph Nevill were charged with
acting riotously and unlawfully, assaulting the sheriff, and
intimidating and free holders during the Prince William
election. Farrow and Nevill confessed whereupon they were
reprimanded and discharged after paying their fines.
Lately married at Dumfries Willoughby Tebbs Esq. to the
amiable and accomplished Miss Betsy Carr daughter of
William Carr Merchant.

(From Washington diaries) lodged at McCraes in Dumfries
sending the horses to the tavern.
Patents issued to Mr. James Deneale of Dumfries Dec. 4,
1806 for oven, July 1809 wheat rubber 1820 for mapping instrument.
To be sold at Public Vendue on Sat. the 6th of Nov. at the
wharf (for the benefit of the underwriters 11 packages imported
in the Sloop William Capt. Brown from Clyde and
damaged Huie Reed.
Nov. 1774 - At a meeting of the Jockey Club this day Nov. 8
resolved that in conformity to the 8th article of the resolves of
the General Congress the Dumfries Races that were advertised
to be run on the 29th of ths month be postponed.
Notice that I intend to leave this country for Europe for a
few months, by the first opportunity Wm. P. Tebbs.
Last week a man in Dumfries being much intoxicated fell
down a pair of steps, which accident put a period to his
existence a few hours later.
Mr. McGraths company of comedians "The Father" "The
Witches" "The Medley of Lovers." Ad informing their
patrons that they will open the theatre in Dumfries on Tues.
the 28th inst. The door to be opened at 6 and the curtain to rise
at 7 o'clock precisely.
This is to forewarn all persons from trusting my wife
Hannah Baylis for that I will not pay any debt she shall contract
of the publication hereof.
About 4 o'clock last Tues. morning Mr. McDaniels tavern in
Dumfries was destroyed by fire supposed to be occasioned by
a candle being left at the bar. A number of gentlemen were
asleep in the house and narrowly escaped by jumping out of
the chamber windows, some of whom were much hurt. The
fire had got to so great a height before discovered that many
of the gentlemen had not time to take their wearing apparel
