[2 Dumfries, VA - Bi-Centennial]
TO THE PEOPLE OF DUMFRIES, VIRGINIA
On this most important occasion of the Bi-Centenary
of your village of Dumfries, Virginia, it is fitting that the
Provost of the Royal and Ancient Burgh of Dumfries,
whose famous and distinguished name you are honored
to hold, should acknowledge with pride and gratitude this auspicious
200th Anniversary of your village. Although your
history does not descend to the long distant past as our
town does, nevertheless you have, during these 200 years,
maintained a dignity which is all your own, notwithstanding
the vicissitudes of time and the ravages of fire which
overtook your town on the 14th January 1927.
We in Dumfries, now rightly acknowledged as the
"Queen of the South," have, I am glad to say, continued
with the years to prosper numerically, commercially and
professionally.
It is remarkable coincidence that your town, which
was once the Chief Port in America should have declined
to such an extent bringing in its train the loss of trade,
industry and commerce. We, in the South of Scotland, have
had a similar experience for at one time we were known as
the Port of Dumfries. This designation passed from us
many years ago, yet at the same time it left us still holding
and maintaining a very important position amongst the
Burghs of Scotland.
