John Adams dies;
Quantico landmark
John Adams, who came to
Quantico in 1921 and became
a institution -- even a legend in
his own time -- is dead.
The veteran town sergeant
was found dead in his bed early
Monday, apparently shot with
his own gun. An autopsy was
ordered.
Adams, who friends said was
ailing in recent months, came as
a Marine to the town which is
surrounded by the Quantico
Marine Corp Base. He served as
an MP on the base for four years
and then in 1927, following his
release, became the town's
police force.
He was designated town
sergeant and served the town
some 43 years.
At his job, even though he
lost a leg on duty to 1929, and
even when he was pressing 76,
Adams walked about three
miles a day checking on meters,
watching traffic and having a
salutation for almost everyone
who walked by.
"I've seen them come here as
junior lieutenants, leave and
return years later as four-star
generals," Adams said of some
of the men he came to know.
Almost every visitor to the
town, for no matter how brief,
caught sight of Adams. It was
almost as sure as the sun was
shining that he'd be somewhere
there, directing traffic or
patroling the meters.
And those overstaying their
meter pennies and nickles could
just as certainly count onTranscriber
