Wednesday May 7, 1980 Our 21st year No. 161, three sections Election roundup 1st woman to be mayor Martha N. Black ended 231 years of male dominance in the Town of Dumfries yesterday as she became the first woman to win election as the town's mayor. In the election for town council, Olney A. Brawner and Eleanor C. Gum completed successful bids for reelection while E.M. Amidon, Robert S. Brookover, Jr., Thelma R. McGlothlin and Clyde N. Washington, Jr. won first- time council seats to complete the six- person body. Mrs. Black captured 199 votes to defeat former councilman Paul B. Clary and James Weisenburger. Clary recieved 114 votes, and Weisenburger recieved 67. "I'm overwhelmed by so many votes," Mrs. Black said, "I didn't think I would win by that large of a number. I'm very excited." Brawner led all council candidates - See WOMAN, Page A-5 WOMAN From Page A-1 with 251 votes. He was followed by Amidon with 238 votes, Washington with 237, Mrs. Gum with 229, Brookover with 218 and Mrs. McGlothlin with 192. Vote totals for losing candidates were 180 for Claude C. Thomas. Jr.. 165 for incumbent Majorie J. Davis, 150 for Barbara S. Kirby, 100 for Thomas I. Ard and 78 for Anne Z. Christensen. About her priorities as mayor, Mrs. Black said she hopes to work with the council and town's citizens to unify the town and direct its efforts to benefiting the people. "We'll have a good council," Mrs Black said, "I think we all have the citizen's interest first and foremost in our minds."
