OLDE PRINCE WILLIAM COUNTY 1776 - 1976 A look at the military during the days of and after the revolution, compiled by the Eastern Prince William Chamber of Commerce Bicentennial committee: 1770 - On Saturday night last broke jail in Dumfries a certain Samuel Thomas whom enlisted in Augusta as a soldier in the service of the United States of America. 1779 - Deserted three recruits from Prince William County, Andrew Murphey an Irishman 5'8", James Miller, an Englishman, 5'8", Robert Wooderfield, an Englishman, 5'11", $50. each. William Linton. Congress orders Hessian officers to be taken to Dumfries. They left Baltimore January 18 and on Jaunary 22 reached Dumfries where they remained until September 1777. A letter to Williamsburg pleading for vessels, boats and other means of transportation for 5,130 barrels of flour and meal purchased several places including Dumfries. "The wants of the army demand great and immediate exertions." 1776 - A warrent to Capt. Andrew Leitch for 300:0:0 pounds upon account to be advanced 50 pounds to each company of the minute men of Prince William. 1776 - "Ordered that all the field officers of the third battalion be called into duty immediately and repair to their stations at Dumfries. Letter 'I understand that there are some swords at Dumfries left there during the late war, perhaps we could obtain them. (1816) Letter "Was marched to Dumfries where I was innoculated for the smallpox, on recovering from which I was marched to Valley Forge" Letter Henry Lee to Gov. Jefferson "Enemy making up the River, and the town of Dumfries with the warehouses on Quantico Creek might be their object and that the inhabitants might be secured against these Plunderers, I immediately ordered all militia could be armed to rendevous at the mouth of Quantico, and then having been there two days about 40 on duty. Letter Col. Willoughby Tebbs to Gov. 1800. Has collected the arms in the hands of the mlitia. Regards them as the worst he has ever seen. That by an act of October 1780, 48 men were required and were accordingly raised, two of whom cut off their fingers after the draft, I was discharged as being a lunatick. Nine deserted and one remains in the county armed. The whole from the county amounting to 269. "He with his (wigfall) brigade was posted at Dumfries where I heard he lay drunk most of the time. Fortunately before his brigade ever got action, he has elected to Congress and removed from the army. June 1777, re: Hessian soldiers as prisoners of war sent to Dumfries "to be there closely confined and 36 men of the militia were ordered to serve as guard-later reduced. 1776 - A warrent to Col. Harry Lee for 7:7:6 pounds for 1475 flints purchased by him an lodged at the Publick Store.
