The young 'uns had their chance
and they sounded like rank
amateurs. Then Jessie Mae
Monroe, 73, made her way to the
microphone. Here was an
authentic hog-caller, backed by
43 years experience. Mrs.
Monroe, of 1707 Florida Ave.,
Woodbridge, a former North
Carolina, native, won the calling
contest at Dumfries Downhome
Day. At right, two "old-timers"
have a go at the watermelon-
eating contest. They're "Tops"
Amidon (left) and James Bishop.
