Biography
Alba Corrado is a designer, artist and educator working in Providence, Rhode Island. Born and raised in Poughkeepsie, NY, Corrado earned a BFA in Painting from the Rhode Island Institute of Design and a MFA in Sculpture from the University of Illinois, Champaign-Urbana.
Aided by a grant from the Bunting Institute, she was mentored while at the University of Illinois by the figurative sculptor Frank Gallo. She creates sculptural works in clay that are ultimately cast in bronze or precious metals. Corrado has taught at the Rhode Island School of Design for the past thirty years. Her sculptural works range from life-sized figures in bronze to shrines and altarpieces. Corrado also creates handcrafted raised letter bronze plaques using the age-old techniques of sand and the lost wax process.
She said, “I have always been fascinated by folk art, by its unequivocal and colorful staging of archetypes – images like those found in fairy tales, myths, and dreams.”
