Biography
Primarily self-taught, Larry Blackwood has spent thirty-five years exploring self-expression through photography. He originally worked in a black and white darkroom environment. In 1998, with the advent of advanced digital techniques, he switched to digital methods, marking the beginning of an intensive period of discovery and advancement of his art that still continues today.
Blackwood grew up in Kansas where he earned a degree in Sociology at Wichita State University, later moving to Arizona for graduate school. After graduating, he took a job with the Indian Health Service in Anchorage, Alaska, where he met his wife Connie. They married in Montana while building their first home and attending graduate school at Montana State University. He completed a PhD in Biostatistics at the University of Alabama at Birmingham in 1989. Blackwood worked as a statistician at the Idaho National Laboratory until retiring in 2007. Since retiring, he and his wife have moved back to their Bozeman home, and he now pursues photography full-time.
