Biography
Alexander Calder was one of the most important sculptors of the 20th century and a prodigious artist with a restless creative spirit. Beside creating his distinctive mobiles and stabiles, he was a painter, printmaker, miniaturist, book illustrator, designer of theater sets, jewelry, tapestries, and political posters. He created a large number of whimsical color lithographs. His publisher Aime’ Maeght, was a prominent Parisian art dealer and founder of the French magazine Derriere le Miroir which was issued without interruptions until 1982. The magazine contained articles about art and was illustrated with original lithographs by major artists of post war Europe including Miró, Chagall, Calder, and Matisse.
