Biography
Sharon Hudson was an accomplished portrait and landscape artist who worked in pencil, charcoal, pastel, acrylic and oil. Born in Idaho Falls, Idaho, she graduated in 1953 from the University of Idaho in Moscow. She taught art in Pocatello, and moved to Southern California in 1989, where she attended and taught at Pasadena City College, exhibiting in the Sierra Madre Gallery.
Her education and training consisted of and was influenced by several prominent artists and educators. At the University of Idaho from 1948-1952 under Mary Kirkwood, Sharon trained in figure drawing, composition in dark and light patterns and beginning painting. At Rick’s College in the 1970’s under Robert Powell she studied design and composition, and the “art principles.” During the 1970’s and 80’s while in the Idaho Falls Art Guild and Visiting Artists Workshops she studied color harmony under Sergei Bongart and portraits and proportions of the figure, and opaque and glazing techniques with Jan Herring. After moving to Taos, New Mexico in the late 1990’s, she exhibited her art in the Bean Gallery.
Inspired by Abstract Expressionists (de Kooning, Rothko, and Franz Kline), Sharon clarified in her own mind what was important to her in art and what direction to go. Nature and forms, and ideas, shapes, and colors derived from nature were significant to her, and she used nature to inspire her and work on her imagination. “I want to paint according to what I feel inside, to follow my intuition. Keep your vision, and you will soar.”
