Chinese carved figural group depicting a young boy embracing or climbing a tall bamboo-like plant, worked substantially in the round with pierced openwork between the figure and vegetation. The carver has exploited the natural color variation of the stone, using cream to yellow-beige areas principally for the child and pinkish-red to reddish-brown zones for much of the plant. Incised lines articulate the elongated leaves, clothing and other details. Carved from a variegated ornamental stone provisionally considered a soapstone/pyrophyllite-type material; exact mineral composition remains undetermined.
