Carved Bicolor Stone Figural Group with Male Figure, Fish and Lotus
Entry/Object ID
SC0502
Description
Chinese carved bicolor ornamental stone figural group depicting a male figure accompanied by a prominent fish and additional aquatic imagery amid layered lotus leaves and plant forms. The composition is carved substantially in the round with overlapping and undercut elements. The naturally variegated material ranges from pale cream and peach to saturated reddish-brown, with the contrasting color zones deliberately exploited to distinguish the figures and surrounding vegetation. The male figure is clearly modeled with head, facial features and robes, although his identity and the precise narrative represented have not been established. Fish and lotus carry traditional Chinese auspicious associations with abundance and prosperity, but the presence of the human figure may indicate a more specific narrative or symbolic subject. Exact stone type undetermined; provisionally classified within the soapstone/Shoushan-type softstone subgroup pending material identification. China, probably 20th century. No inscription or maker's mark observed.
