Name/Title
Carved Bicolor Stone Figure of a Bearded Fisherman Carrying a FishEntry/Object ID
SC0505Description
Chinese carved variegated stone figure of a bearded fisherman, depicted standing among rockwork and carrying a large fish over his shoulder. The figure wears a close-fitting cap and long flowing robes, with strongly modeled facial features, deeply carved eyes, mustache and pointed beard. The carving makes deliberate use of the naturally contrasting cream, pale yellow, pink and reddish-brown coloration of the stone, the darkest material emphasizing the head and portions of the robes. The fish is carved along the reverse with an articulated scaled body. Cream and reddish-brown Chinese ornamental stone, probably softstone/pyrophyllite-family material; exact mineral composition unconfirmed.Type of Sculpture
