Carved Bicolor Stone Group of an Elder and Attendant Seated on a Woven Basket
Entry/Object ID
SC0601
Description
Chinese carved figural group in variegated cream, yellow, pink-red and brown ornamental stone, depicting a long-bearded elderly man seated beside a younger male attendant or disciple. The elder wears a long flowing robe and is distinguished by an elongated pointed beard, while the smaller figure sits closely alongside. The reverse is more schematically carved and incorporates a broad woven basket-form structure rendered with horizontal bands and repeated vertical elements. The carving exploits natural color variation in the stone, including reddish-purple coloration concentrated along the lower front of the composition. Principal frontal surfaces are polished, while the reverse and underside retain comparatively rough and visible working marks. Exact stone type and identity of the figures remain undetermined.
