Carved Stone Boulder with Two Bearded Figures in a Rocky Grotto
Name/Title
Carved Stone Boulder with Two Bearded Figures in a Rocky GrottoEntry/Object ID
SC0105Description
Chinese carved ornamental stone boulder depicting two bearded male figures within a rocky grotto or mountain setting. The figures, wearing long garments with prominently modeled sleeves and bent arms, are carved from a smoother translucent honey-yellow portion of the stone, while much of the surrounding gray-white crystalline matrix has been retained in a comparatively natural state to form the rocky environment. The identities of the figures remain uncertain; they may represent scholars, sages, Daoist immortals, luohan, or other traditional personages. The carving demonstrates deliberate exploitation of contrasting zones within the natural stone. Exact mineral composition and date remain undetermined.Type of Sculpture
