Description

Chinese carved variegated stone covered vessel modeled as bundled sections of bamboo, with a rat or mouse climbing across the upper portion and a sinuous bamboo branch or related vegetal element extending around the body. The cream-to-gray stone displays pronounced reddish-purple and burgundy color zones selectively incorporated into the animal, vegetation and other elements of the composition. The bamboo-form body is articulated with horizontal nodes and extensive vertical incised detailing. Carved substantially in the round with relief, incised and polished decoration and fitted with a separate stone cover. Probably soapstone or related Chinese carving stone; specific material and date remain unconfirmed. Chinese, probably late Qing dynasty to 20th century.
