Blue-and-White Porcelain Gu-Form Vase with Buddhist Lions and Wanli Mark
Entry/Object ID
CR0102
Description
Chinese blue-and-white porcelain gu-form vase with a spreading foot, compressed globular center and tall trumpet neck. Reserved panels depict Buddhist lions with traditional auspicious accoutrements, surrounded by densely patterned diaper, geometric and pendant borders. The form and decoration deliberately reference earlier Chinese ceramic traditions. The base bears the six-character mark 大明萬曆年製 (Dà Míng Wànlì nián zhì), “Made during the Wanli reign of the Great Ming,” considered an apocryphal mark.
