Ceramic Figural Scholar's Studio Group with Two Ladies and Writing Table

Entry/Object ID

CR0108

Description

Three-piece Chinese polychrome ceramic figural group depicting two elegantly dressed ladies engaged in cultivated leisure activities with a separate scholar's table. One seated lady handles a small rectangular object beside a textured implement or board, while the reclining figure rests against a pierced scholar's-rock-like support surrounded by profusely modeled flowers. The separate table carries an integral painted panel or mat, brush washer/palette, brush rest with brushes, and cylindrical vessel. Finely modeled coiffures, jewelry, individual fingers, floral appliqués and richly colored garments contrast with the pale matte treatment of the women's faces and hands. Multiple impressed seals and an internal handwritten inscription potentially identify the workshop or maker.
