Carved Bicolor Stone Recumbent Buddhist Lion (Shishi)

Name/Title

Carved Bicolor Stone Recumbent Buddhist Lion (Shishi)

Entry/Object ID

SC0203

Description

Chinese carved bicolor hardstone figure of a recumbent Buddhist or guardian lion, modeled with muscular forequarters, curled mane and brows, broad muzzle and stylized scrolling details. The compact animal rests with its limbs folded beneath the body and is carved and polished on the underside as well as the principal surfaces. The naturally variegated stone shifts from warm yellow-brown and caramel tones across the head and upper body to pale cream or grayish-white along the limbs and hindquarters, with the color zoning apparently incorporated deliberately into the composition. Pierced at the rear for suspension and presently fitted with a red cord and decorative bead.
