Chinese Calligraphy Hanging Scroll — Mao Zedong's Pursue the Retreating Enemy Couplet

Entry/Object ID

WH0107

Description

Monumental Chinese calligraphy hanging scroll presenting a celebrated couplet from Mao Zedong's 1949 poem, The People's Liberation Army Captures Nanjing. The verse invokes the historical Hegemon-King Xiang Yu to emphasize decisive action and the pursuit of victory over superficial reputation. Fourteen large, expressive black characters descend in a single vertical column, creating a powerful composition within a restrained cream-colored mounting. A small red seal accompanies the inscription. The work likely complements WH0108, which displays the succeeding couplet from the same poem, together expressing themes of historical transformation, perseverance, and revolutionary determination.

Principal inscription: 宜將剩勇追窮寇,不可沽名學霸王 (Yí jiāng shèng yǒng zhuī qióng kòu, bù kě gū míng xué bà wáng). Translation: “We should summon our remaining courage to pursue the defeated enemy, rather than seek an empty reputation by imitating the Hegemon-King.” This is the third couplet from Mao Zedong's 1949 poem The People's Liberation Army Captures Nanjing. A small red rectangular seal appears near the upper portion; its characters remain unverified. WH0108 contains the following couplet from the same poem.
