Description
Chinese flattened circular snuff bottle, probably late Qing dynasty to Republic period, provisionally late 19th to early 20th century, constructed from a cream-colored organic or organic-appearing material of presently unconfirmed type. The flattened circular body is framed on each principal face by a raised border surrounding a recessed or defined pictorial panel. Both faces are finely incised and darkened with figural garden scenes: one depicting two women standing amid stylized vegetation, one holding a rounded object and the other a leafy plant or floral spray; the reverse depicting two women beside flowering plants and a tree, one seated or leaning and the other standing. Fine parallel incision and cross-hatching articulate the figures' hair, garments and landscape details. The bottle has a tall waisted neck and fitted stopper retaining a slender spoon, together with an associated cream-colored ring tethered to the neck by dark cord. No maker's mark or inscription is visible in the photographs examined. Surface discoloration, spotting and wear are present consistent with age and handling.
