Description

Carved pale green hardstone sculptural group depicting a Buddhist lion with attendant cubs, holding coins representing the element of good fortune/spirit on a wooden base, worked substantially in the round with deeply undercut and pierced passages and incised detailing to the animals' fur and features. The pale gray-green/celadon-colored stone displays contrasting honey-yellow to russet areas selectively incorporated into projecting anatomical and decorative elements. The principal lion is modeled with prominent rounded eyes, a broad muzzle, and a curling mane amid smaller interacting figures and scrolling forms. Presented on a separately carved, fitted dark wood stand. Chinese or Chinese-style; precise stone identification and date presently undetermined.
