Name/Title

Carved Stone Buddhist Lion (Shishi) with Cub and Coin Motif

Entry/Object ID

SC0103

Description

Chinese carved pale green and whitish hardstone sculptural group depicting a Buddhist lion with cub, worked substantially in the round with pierced and undercut passages, curling mane and tail elements, incised detailing, and a large circular coin with square central aperture incorporated into the composition. The pale gray-green to whitish jade-like stone shows extensive honey-yellow coloration and a localized green inclusion, apparently incorporated selectively into design elements. The lion-and-cub subject belongs to the traditional repertoire of auspicious Chinese imagery associated with rank, advancement and descendants, while the coin carries an additional association with prosperity. Presented on a separately carved fitted dark wood stand. Chinese or Chinese-style; precise stone identification and date undetermined
