Description

Chinese carved variegated softstone mountain-form landscape, extensively worked on both faces and depicting an idealized mountainous retreat populated by groups of robed scholars and attendants among pavilions, bridges, pine trees, paths and monumental rock formations. The principal face is densely carved in graduated relief with areas of fine undercutting and minute architectural, figural and botanical detail. The reverse presents a more restrained mountain landscape with pine trees and a solitary traveler. Carved from cream, honey-tan and pinkish-red variegated ornamental stone, provisionally identified as a soapstone/pyrophyllite-family material; specific stone variety undetermined. China, probably 20th century. No maker's mark or inscription observed. Mounted on a separate fitted dark wood stand with geometric fret decoration.
