Carved Bicolor Stone Recumbent Buddhist Lion (Shishi) with Brocade Ball

Name/Title

Carved Bicolor Stone Recumbent Buddhist Lion (Shishi) with Brocade Ball

Entry/Object ID

SC0903

Description

Chinese carved bicolor ornamental stone figure of a recumbent Buddhist or guardian lion (shishi), modeled with an open mouth, curled mane, and stylized scrolling body ornament, accompanied by a pierced brocade ball. The carving is worked substantially in the round, with the legs and paws continuing across the underside. The carver deliberately exploited the stone's natural color zoning, placing reddish-brown/russet material across much of the head and upper body and pale gray-white translucent material across the lower body and underside. A darker natural inclusion is visible along one flank. Associated yellow suspension cord and separate fitted dark wood display stand.
