Carved Bicolor Stone Recumbent Buddhist Lion (Shishi)
Name/Title
Carved Bicolor Stone Recumbent Buddhist Lion (Shishi)Entry/Object ID
SC1001Description
Chinese carved bicolor ornamental hardstone recumbent Buddhist lion, compactly modeled with an open mouth, pronounced muzzle, stylized curled mane and scrolling motifs extending across the body. The animal rests with its limbs tucked beneath the body, while a pierced terminal at the hindquarters accommodates a red suspension cord. The carving makes deliberate decorative use of the stone's natural coloration, transitioning from cream-yellow and pale peach at the head and forequarters to reddish-brown over much of the body. Carved substantially in the round with incised and undercut details and a polished surface.Type of Sculpture
