Carved Bicolor Stone Figural Group of an Elder and Child Beneath a Flowering Tree
Name/Title
Carved Bicolor Stone Figural Group of an Elder and Child Beneath a Flowering TreeEntry/Object ID
SC1002Description
Chinese carved figural group depicting an elderly man embracing or supporting a small child beneath a densely carved flowering tree. Worked from a naturally variegated cream-yellow and salmon-red ornamental stone, the carving makes deliberate use of the contrasting color zones, with the reddish material defining the figures and branching trunk and the lighter material forming much of the dense foliage and flower heads. The tree is extensively carved with overlapping pointed petals or leaves, pierced openings and areas of undercutting, while the figures are modeled with expressive faces, articulated hands and folded garments. The reverse retains broader, more smoothly worked areas of stone.Type of Sculpture
