SC1101Description
Chinese carved pale green jade-like hardstone group depicting an elephant and monkey amid densely arranged scrolling foliage and auspicious botanical forms. The compact composition is carved substantially in the round, with overlapping forms, pierced and undercut passages, incised details and polished surfaces. The monkey is shown nestled against or interacting with the larger elephant, forming a composition likely carrying auspicious symbolic or rebus significance in the Chinese decorative tradition. The pale gray-green to whitish translucent stone contains cloudy areas, darker inclusions and localized brighter green coloration. Accompanied by an associated carved wood display stand.Type of Sculpture
