Name/Title

Carved Bicolor Stone Figure with Bamboo

Entry/Object ID

SC1102

Description

Chinese carved bicolor ornamental stone figural group depicting a robed human figure grasping or climbing against a large bamboo stalk with associated leaves. The carving is worked substantially in the round, with deeply modeled robe folds, incised bamboo segments, foliate details and polished surfaces. The carver has deliberately incorporated the natural cream, pale yellow, pink and reddish-brown coloration of the stone into the composition, with the darker material emphasizing much of the figure and lighter areas defining portions of the bamboo and vegetation.
