Carved Green and Russet Stone Animal GroupEntry/Object ID
SC1104Description
Chinese carved pale gray-green and russet ornamental hardstone group depicting a stylized long-necked, long-eared ungulate surrounded by large curling and lobed forms. The animal is modeled with an elongated upright neck, small head, prominent elongated or pendant ear-like features, slender body and legs. The compact composition is carved substantially in the round with extensive pierced openwork separating the animal from the surrounding elements. The reverse is more simply worked with shallow incised details. The stone ranges from pale celadon-gray and green to yellow-brown and russet, with scattered darker inclusions; the contrasting natural coloration appears deliberately incorporated into the composition. Minor surface wear and a visible fissure near the upper portion of the tall rear element are present. Displayed with a carved wooden stand.Type of Sculpture
