Carved Stone Mountain Landscape with Figures, Pine Trees and PavilionsEntry/Object ID
SC1105Description
Chinese carved variegated stone mountain landscape, worked extensively on both principal faces with pine trees, architectural structures and numerous human figures. The primary face presents a densely layered landscape with figures gathered beneath mature pines and around rockwork, with a pavilion or temple structure rising above. Deeply carved and pierced branches create considerable spatial depth, while finely incised pine needles, roof tiles, garments and architectural details provide contrasting surface texture. The opposite face continues the mountain landscape with prominently carved pines and architecture, demonstrating that the composition was conceived as a substantially two-sided object rather than as a simple frontal relief. The stone varies from pale cream and beige to honey-brown, gray-brown and reddish-brown, and the carver appears to have incorporated these natural tonal variations into the landscape. The underside is broadly flattened and comparatively unfinished, retaining visible cutting or grinding marks.Type of Sculpture
