Carved Variegated Stone Landscape with Figures and WaterfallEntry/Object ID
SC1106Description
Chinese carved variegated stone landscape boulder, the principal face depicting two robed figures beside a tall cascading waterfall beneath trees and mountainous rockwork. The composition is selectively carved in relief and incised detail, with deeper pierced and undercut work concentrated in the tree canopy above the waterfall. One standing figure gestures toward or across the landscape while a smaller companion stands nearby.
The carving makes deliberate use of the stone's pronounced natural coloration, ranging from mauve-purple and muted reddish tones to cream, gray and brown. A broad pale vertical band has been incorporated into the waterfall, providing a particularly effective example of color-directed carving. The reverse is more sparsely worked, retaining broad polished areas of naturally patterned stone with limited landscape and vegetation details. Mounted on a fitted dark wood stand with geometric fret decoration.Type of Sculpture
