Name/Title

Carved Dark Stone Scholar's Object with Twin Wells and Pine Decoration

Entry/Object ID

SC1202

Description

Chinese carved dark stone scholar's object of irregular rounded form, the upper surface worked with two circular recessed wells surrounded by a densely textured landscape composition. The decoration incorporates stylized pine trees, rockwork and small zoomorphic or avian forms, with portions of the design exploiting a contrasting pale gray-green area of the stone. The larger surrounding surface remains dark gray to nearly black. The reverse is essentially undecorated and smoothly finished, retaining numerous fine surface scratches consistent with handling and use. The object's precise function remains uncertain. The paired circular depressions suggest use as an ink-related scholar's implement, water receptacle or related desk object.
