Carved Variegated Stone Figure of a Seated Elder in Rockwork
Name/Title
Carved Variegated Stone Figure of a Seated Elder in RockworkEntry/Object ID
SC1203Description
Chinese carved variegated ornamental stone boulder depicting a seated elderly male figure, probably a sage or scholar, incorporated into the natural form of the stone. The robed figure sits with one knee raised and one arm extending downward toward the surrounding rockwork. His elongated facial features and high-domed head suggest an elderly or legendary personage, although no diagnostic attribute permits a secure identification. The carving selectively exploits the naturally irregular stone, leaving substantial portions of the tan, cream, gray-white and dark gray matrix comparatively unworked. The underside remains largely rough and exposes the heterogeneous structure of the material.Type of Sculpture
