SC1204Description
Two Chinese carved variegated ornamental stone figures displayed together on an elaborate stepped carved-wood stand. The first depicts a recumbent mythical beast with an open mouth, curled decorative features, four-footed body and prominently carved feathered wings; its precise identification remains undetermined. The second depicts a standing robed figure holding a large fan, possibly representing a Daoist immortal or legendary personage. Both carvings exploit the natural coloration of the stone, ranging from cream and pale tan to gray-beige and pink-red. The two carvings are presently displayed as a group.Type of Sculpture
