Description

Chinese carved bicolor ornamental hardstone figure depicting a single recumbent Buddhist lion (shishi) interacting with a large pierced brocade ball. The compact composition is carved substantially in the round with openwork around the ball, undercut details, incised treatment of the mane and body, and polished surfaces. The naturally variegated stone ranges from creamy white and pale yellow to honey and caramel brown, with pronounced color zoning incorporated into the carving. A red suspension cord with decorative knot, blue bead and tassel is attached.
