Name/Title
Carved Shoushan Stone Group of Felines in RockworkEntry/Object ID
SC1304Description
Chinese carved Shoushan stone group depicting several feline-like animals arranged among naturalistic rock formations. The carving makes deliberate use of the stone’s contrasting coloration, with warm yellow-brown areas defining the animals against a predominantly cream to gray-white matrix. The figures are carved substantially in the round and in high relief, with modeled musculature, facial features, paws and fur details, while portions of the natural stone mass are retained to form the surrounding rockwork. Accompanied by Shoushan Stone Professional Identification Certificate No. A3-062 issued by the Shoushan Stone Professional Committee of the Fujian Provincial Gem and Jade Association, identifying the material as Shoushan stone (寿山石), with yellow-white coloration, waxy luster, opaque transparency and a recorded refractive index of 1.56. The certificate further notes the carving’s use of the natural form and coloration of the stone.Type of Sculpture
