SC1404Description
Large Chinese carved black ornamental stone group depicting birds perched among flowering branches and foliage, extensively worked in the round with deep undercutting and openwork carving. A prominent bird occupies the foreground, its wings and plumage articulated in incised detail, while another bird perches among the upper branches. Large blossoms and smaller flowers emerge throughout the composition, selected blossoms having a contrasting pale or white surface treatment that highlights their carved petals against the predominantly black stone. The densely arranged composition incorporates pierced openings between the branches, flowers and birds to create considerable depth. The upper vertical elements terminate in deliberately polished surfaces. Mounted on an associated brown carved-wood display stand with paired inward-rolled supports.Type of Sculpture
