Carved Bicolor Stone Crab with Shell and Aquatic Motifs
Entry/Object ID
SC1405
Description
Chinese carved variegated ornamental stone group depicting a large crab accompanied by a spiral shell and additional aquatic motifs. The composition makes deliberate use of the naturally contrasting coloration of the stone, with the crab carved predominantly from a dark gray zone set against surrounding cream, taupe and gray-brown areas. The crab is modeled prominently across the upper portion of the carving, its shell, segmented legs and claws worked in relief and partially undercut from the surrounding stone. A spiral shell appears prominently at the front, with additional carved forms completing the aquatic composition. The reverse is more simply worked and retains broad polished areas displaying the natural variation and veining of the stone.
