Description

Large Chinese carved pale green ornamental stone boulder depicting Shoulao, the God of Longevity, surrounded by an attendant and an elaborate assemblage of auspicious objects, fruit, vessels and cloud or scroll forms. The principal face is worked in deep relief with extensive drilling and openwork, while large portions of the reverse and underside retain the boulder's naturally irregular dark brown outer skin and matrix. The pale gray-green stone has a polished, waxy appearance on the carved surfaces, contrasting strongly with the brown natural exterior. Displayed on a separate pierced hardwood stand.
