Carved Reddish Stone Figure of a Seated Monk
Name/Title
Carved Reddish Stone Figure of a Seated MonkEntry/Object ID
SC1502Description
Chinese carved reddish-brown ornamental stone figure of a seated monk, shown bald and wearing a loosely draped robe with both hands resting near the knees. The compact figure is modeled in the round, with individually carved facial features, ears, hands and garment folds, and a smoothly polished surface displaying natural variations from orange-red to deeper reddish brown with occasional lighter inclusions. The bald head and monastic-style robe support identification as a monk or religious figure, although the absence of a distinctive attribute does not permit secure identification as a particular Buddhist personage or Luohan.Type of Sculpture
