Carved Variegated Stone Plaque with Dragon among Clouds
Name/Title
Carved Variegated Stone Plaque with Dragon among CloudsEntry/Object ID
SC1505Description
Chinese carved polychrome ornamental stone plaque depicting a sinuous dragon pursuing a flaming pearl amid scrolling clouds. The dragon is carved in relief and partial openwork, with articulated scales, clawed limbs, flowing mane and curling whisker-like elements. The composition makes deliberate use of naturally contrasting reddish-orange and burgundy areas of the stone for the dragon and surrounding flame and cloud motifs against a dramatically mottled gray-black, white, cream and tan matrix. The reverse is largely undecorated and polished, displaying the natural coloration and structure of the stone. Mounted on an associated pierced carved-wood stand.Type of Sculpture
