Carved Bicolor Stone Figure of a Seated Monk or Luohan in Rockwork

Name/Title

Carved Bicolor Stone Figure of a Seated Monk or Luohan in Rockwork

Entry/Object ID

SC1601

Description

Chinese carved bicolor ornamental stone figure depicting a seated monastic figure, possibly a Luohan (arhat), incorporated into naturalistic rockwork and vegetation. The compact carving makes deliberate use of the stone's natural coloration, ranging from pale cream and honey-yellow to caramel and reddish-brown, with the figure and surrounding forms carved in varying relief from the natural block. The reverse is more simply worked, retaining broad polished areas of the original stone.
