Carved Bicolor Stone Reclining Figure, Probably Budai, with Sack

Name/Title

Carved Bicolor Stone Reclining Figure, Probably Budai, with Sack

Entry/Object ID

SC1602

Description

Chinese carved bicolor ornamental stone figure depicting a reclining robed male, probably Budai, resting against a large rounded sack or bundle. The figure is dynamically posed with his head tilted upward and voluminous robes falling in deeply modeled folds around the body. The large sack is distinguished by a prominent circular tied-loop motif at one end. The carving exploits the natural variation of the stone from pale olive-gray and yellow-ochre to warm honey-brown, with pierced and undercut passages adding depth around the head and garments. The underside remains largely rough-worked. Accompanied by a dark wood scroll-form display stand.
