Carved Variegated Stone Mountain Landscape with Dragon and Pine Landscape
Entry/Object ID
SC1603
Description
Chinese two-sided carved variegated ornamental stone mountain-form carving. The principal face is worked in layered relief with one or more sinuous dragons among cloud and mountain forms, incorporating pierced and undercut passages and a central flame-like motif possibly representing the flaming pearl. The reverse is more delicately carved in low relief and incision with a mountainous waterside landscape incorporating pine trees, architecture and a small boat. The carver has deliberately exploited the naturally variegated salmon-red, ochre, cream and dark gray coloration of the stone as part of the pictorial compositions. The underside retains prominent sawn and working marks. Accompanied by a dark carved wood pedestal stand with key-fret border.
