Carved Pale Green and Russet Stone Caparisoned HorseEntry/Object ID
SC1604Description
Chinese carved pale green and russet variegated stone figure of a standing caparisoned horse, modeled with an arched neck and elaborate saddle, saddlecloth, bridle and harness details. The horse is carved in the round with substantial detailing to both sides, including incised mane and tack, deeply modeled saddle trappings, pierced elements and an integral rectangular stone base. The naturally variegated material ranges from pale celadon-green and cream to brown, russet and dark purplish veining, which continues through the underside of the base. The conception draws upon traditional Chinese prestige-horse imagery and may be Tang-inspired, although no early date is presently assigned. Accompanied by an elaborate carved wood display stand apparently fitted to the carving.Type of Sculpture
