Carved Variegated Stone Mountain Landscape with Figures and Pavilion
Entry/Object ID
SC1703
Description
Chinese carved variegated ornamental stone boulder depicting a mountainous landscape with figures, architecture, trees and pathways. The principal face is carved in varying levels of relief with two robed figures standing within an elevated landscape near a pavilion or architectural complex, with additional figures and a probable pack animal below. Trees and deeply worked rock formations create multiple spatial planes across the composition. The reverse carries a more restrained secondary landscape incorporating mountains, vegetation and architectural structures. The carver has deliberately exploited the stone's natural transitions from honey-yellow and tan through reddish-pink to gray and gray-white as elements of the composition. Probably Chinese, 20th century. Material provisionally identified as a soapstone/pyrophyllite-family ornamental stone; exact mineral and source undetermined. Mounted on an associated fitted dark wood stand.
