Chinese carved variegated ornamental stone boulder depicting a mountainous landscape populated by travelers and a caparisoned horse. The principal face is worked in multiple levels of relief, with the horse and accompanying figures crossing an elevated bridge or pathway amid steep mountain formations, trees and architectural elements; additional figures occupy the lower landscape. Considerable piercing and undercutting around the horse, figures, vegetation and architectural details creates pronounced spatial depth. The reverse continues the composition with a more restrained mountain landscape incorporating trees, pathways and architectural elements. The carving exploits the natural honey-yellow, ochre, reddish and gray coloration of the stone as part of the landscape composition. Mounted on an associated fitted dark wood stand.Type of Sculpture
