Carved Bicolor Stone Boy Clinging to a Large Stylized Plant Form

Name/Title

Carved Bicolor Stone Boy Clinging to a Large Stylized Plant Form

Entry/Object ID

SC1801

Description

Chinese carved bicolor ornamental stone figure of a young boy embracing or climbing upon a large reddish stylized natural form. The cream-colored child is carved in pronounced relief against the contrasting reddish portion of the stone, which is articulated with numerous elongated parallel grooves. A small pale projecting element appears near the lower portion of the composition. These features suggest a vegetal subject, possibly a large shoot or related plant form, although the precise identification remains uncertain. The composition deliberately exploits the natural color zoning of the stone to distinguish the child from the larger form.
