Chinese carved and inscribed variegated ornamental stone depicting a turtle emerging from a broken egg or shell-like enclosure. The naturally rounded stone retains broad areas of brown and dark gray-black coloration, with the darker portion selectively excavated and carved to form the animal and recessed interior. The turtle is rendered with a projecting head, articulated facial features and finely patterned skin and limb. One face of the stone bears a multi-line Chinese inscription with characters highlighted in white and yellow.Type of Sculpture

Multi-column Chinese inscription incised on one face and highlighted in white and yellow. The inscription appears auspicious in character and includes probable references to longevity, heaven and earth, the sun and moon, and the turtle; several highly stylized characters remain unresolved. The lower of the two prominent yellow characters is provisionally read as 龜/龟 (gui, “turtle”). Full transcription and translation pending specialist verification.Dimensions
